ShoppingTips - Christmas Gift Guide Edit

Leather Jacket, and Alexander McQueen leather cosmeticcase (image info below)
It is Christmas season aka the season of giving! My gifts are wrapped, packed and have been dropped off at the UPS store. Though my jolly Santa mood vanished the second I walked out of my building to juggle boxes amidst heavy snowfall during the three block walk to UPS (phew glad that is over). I can now sit back, relax, and share my favorite gifts for the special ladies in your life this year (or for yourself)!

SpotlightOn - Barre3

Lily Aldridge doing Barre (image via Self)
The month of December is pretty much a string of celebratory lunches, potlucks, drinks and other holiday celebrations, with good cause. But, today, we pause because it is the annual event we have been waiting for: The Victoria's Secret fashion show! I will be tuning in tonight to ogle over the intricate costumes, music and amazing model physiques. I mean... when else are we, the general public, invited as critics and attendants to such a massive and stylish production of re-known caliber?

Unfortunately, tuning in will most likely end in despair wondering when you can look that good!

Makes absolute sense no?

StyleInspiration - A Fashionista's Leather Dress

The leather dress (Image via NobodyKnowsMarc)
My home redecorating project has encouraged me to swiftly dispose of magazines, rather than let them pile up. So, in an attempt to get something out of my subscriptions, I flipped through several mags this weekend in order to ensure any good info would be retained and not missed. So glad I did!

The December InStyle magazine has a feature on the Leather Dress. Truthfully, I have been coveting a leather dress but haven't had the cojones to jump the gun, so this nudge from InStyle is just what I needed!

Here are my picks for THE Leather Dress for you (organized by fashionista muse)!

QOTD - S. Leonard Rubenstein

Curiosity by S. Leonard Rubinstein (via iNeedMotivation)

I constantly hear Steve Jobs words in my head: "stay hungry, stay foolish" as a way to encourage the inquisitive and youthful mind.

As a quote gatherer, I, took it a step further and, found these eloquent words on what it means to be "hungry" aka curious.

Not sure who S. Leonard Rubinstein is but I welcome humility and an earnest passion for learning!

TheHandbagEdit - The Making of an Hermès Kelly

Tommy Ton's image of Garance Doré which sparked my
love & admiration for the Hermès Kelly (image via Style.com)
Recently, my life has been all work and responsibility, with little to no time for indulging in my creative interests. That said, today I had the opportunity to, somewhat, mesh the two. You see every two weeks each member of the cross-departmental team, which I am part of, meets to share what they are currently working on. Given we all have very different roles a sort of icebreaker was introduced in which each week every team-member answers a question procured by the head of our group. Today, the question was: "What would you like to see manufactured if you had the opportunity to visit any factory in the world?"

 I let the question marinate.

ShoppingTips - The Cap Toe Pump (Reinvented Classics!)

Elena Perminova during Paris Haute Couture
Fashion Week (Image via Grazia.IT)
Cap-toe pumps are nothing new. We have seen them on every celebrity possible since their debut on Louis Vuitton's Spring 2012 catwalk! Given it has been almost two years since then I figure they are here to stay. So, why not make the jump and add a suede pair for your fall wardrobe?

Whilst, probably everyone possible has worn Christian's Louboutin's geo pump (admittedly I love these, especially the fuchsia version), but, spikes are more of a trend than a classic, and, when it comes to shoes I tend to lean towards the latter. The two options below are by designers frequently seen on Sarah Jessica Parker: Jean-Michel Cazabat & Manolo Blahnik!

StyleInspiration - Uptown Girl Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo in Brooklyn (image via A girl named Spark)
Camel coats are classic pieces we know we should all have (+Nina Garcia says so!). But, some stylish rebels prefer not subscribing to these essentials.
Eventually we give in and, many times, regret not taking better care of these items when they first came into our life. Moving on to better decisions! Taking a cue from +Olivia Palermo's street style look book why not adopt a camel coat in an updated cropped style?!

QOTD - Yasmin Sewell

Yasmin Sewell's 'it bag' mantra (quote & image via The Coveteur)
Who is Yasmin Sewell? That is a question asked and answered by Vogue magazine. I for one have long admired her stylish shots which inundate the web circles during the various fashion weeks. In addition to being super stylish, she is also smart, here is her handbag shopping motto, one we (& are bank accounts) can benefit from subscribing too!

ShoppingTips - Green with Envy

Exclusive for Intermix Seamed Flare Dress in Emerald Green
with open back $69, orig $298. (image via Intermix)
Every once in awhile I have those serendipitous moments that remind me why I named this blog FashSerendipity. This literally happened minutes ago when I got my nifti alert telling me the Jean Michel Cazabat pumps I had eyed on Intermix dropped way beyond my expectations to $89 dollars! What?! This cannot be for real I said to myself whilst clicking over to Intermix (and silently thanking nifti for their help). Once I added the shoes to cart cart I did a quick search of the rest of the sale items and found the dress - emerald green, flirty and flared & perfect for holiday parties or work! (Cue the angelic choirs singing in my mind!)

Do not let this be the one that got away! If you do not listen to me listen to Glamour magazine who tells you DO pick up an Emerald piece for Fall 2013.

SpotlightOn - Nausheen Shah

Nausheen Shah (image via MusingsinFeminity)
Ever find yourself wondering who is that girl? That happened to me several times these past few weeks when I spotted countless images of Nausheen Shah but none mentioned her name! When I saw her in different images with two of my fave fashionistas: Erica Pelosini & Olivia Palermo I knew I needed to know more.

Turns out Shah is quite the style veteran & has held roles in everything from design to editing to home decor. What else should you know about Nausheen Shah?

StyleInspiration - Parisian Purple (& Gray) Street Style

Rea Papathanasiou - Paris Fashion Week
Fall 2012 (image via Fashionologie)
Paris is on my mind. Given fashion month just ended in Paris last week, my dreams are filled with crisp solitary, yet, romantic strolls in the city of love. Emblematic with French style is the minimalist sartorial quality which all women subscribe to. Veering off of the classic black is it's cousin gray, lighter in spirit but serious in attitude, it can be paired with any color; to blend or bring focus to said piece. My favorite combo is Purple & Gray, which, couldn't be more Paris in it's reflection of architecture and skies during the fall season.

ShoppingTips - Black & White Year-round

New England is having a respite of Fall-like weather with temps in the 70s & 80s this week. So this week's ShoppingTips edit features items that are perfect for the temperamental merry go round that is all too common in the Northeast Fall season.
The Colors: Black and White.
The trends (extensively reported on for Fall/Winter 2013 & Spring/Summer 2014): Plaid, Quilted and Ruffles.

I guarantee you will find yourself reaching for these three items, time and time again, from now until spring hits.

StyleInspiration - VICTORIA BECKHAM SS 2014

Victoria Beckham in a quilted drop waist dress
from her SS 2014 RTW collection (image via E!)

Spring Summer 2014 fashion month is winding down. It is bittersweet for us, observers, relishing the images which flood our instagram feeds! However, we can now translate the runway creations into personal expressions. Take the quilted drop waist dress which debuted in Victoria by Victoria Beckham's SS 2014 presentation, and was subsequently worn by Posh herself whilst out and about!

Now, recently, I have become fascinated with quilted garments! It started with the search for a perfect quilted jacket for fall and has now continued into a quiet search for a nice quilted dress and a skirt, which, I will recognize when I see it. High up on my list is this quilted drop-waist ASOS dress! I see myself wearing the fuchsia one with opaque tights and my favorite black Louboutin rolandos for the chilly nights which our Fall season brings or can absolutely wear the black version with sheer black tights, same Louboutin rolandos and glamourize with some heavy gold jewelry and clutch. The hardest part is deciding which one!

ShoppingTips - Boardroom Blues

Candice Lake in Ginger & Smart at MBFWA via Vogue AU

Long are the days where the little black dress was the only must-have in a lady's closet. We now need the little white dress, the little red dress &, in my humble opinion, the little blue dress.  I especially find myself suggesting this color to the power ladies in my life aka the career women on the sure path of success.

RecipeTime - Cheddar Jalapeño Biscuits

Photo from my kitchen made
 exactly as described here!
At the moment my favorite homemade brunch accompaniment are these Cheddar Jalapeño Biscuits (no rolling required!). They are so good & taste amazing after being frozen for next weekend’s brunch! (In my opinion, brunch is truly the best invention ever. Why? Because I get to enjoy my favorite breakfast foods at a decent time. Let’s get real – under no circumstance would I wake up earlier to cook myself a nice breakfast prior to a long work day).

StyleInspiration - OZWALD BOATENG

We are at the half-point of "fashion month" right now, and, for those of us watching from a far, this is a great time to reflect and learn about the creative process and journey designers undertake with each runway show they present, new store they open, etc. On the heels of London Fashion Week, I find it an opportune time, to suggest a foray into menswear with Ozwald Boateng's documentary "A Man's Story."

The world as a whole is highly fixated on women's fashion and that has worked just fine. However, isn't it fascinating to lend just a bit of attention to that which is foreign to you? For me, that has always been fashion for the male species, given, I grew up in a household dominated by females (six sisters, mom, dad and one baby brother - to be exact). Yet, I always admired and appreciated the clean lines embraced by men in a good jacket, tailored pants, and perfect fitting shirts, but, I didn't know much about what went into it. So, when I came across Boateng's journey (filmed over twelve years), I embraced the opportunity to get a peak behind the scenes of Savile Row, so to speak (in 1994 Boateng became the youngest and first black tailor to have a store on the row), and gain exposure into the foreign lands of menswear.

BeautyTalk - THE BROW

fashion show, New York. (image via Barbara Fialho Instagram)
Browsing through the many behind the scenes shots during the ongoing New York Fashion week I loved seeing that the fierce brow is still going strong! Now, sadly we are not all blessed with the brows divinely bestowed on Barbara Fialho, or Camilla Belle (my brow goddesses), but we all can make the best of what we have got. Here are some tips to get your best brow forward!

QOTD - Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin, Founding Father of the United
States of America, on taking your time.
The founding fathers of the United States of America set the foundation for that which we enjoy today. Who better than to draw inspiration from today than someone that embodied dedication, perseverance and achievement aka Mr. Benjamin Franklin, The First American.

P.S. He was born in Boston, MA! All things great happen here ;)

RecipeTime - White Chocolate Chip & Cranberry Cookies

Recipe by Trisha Yearwood via food network.
Labor day means one thing: summer has officially come to an end. Usually, we focus on the sartorial meaning aka no white after labor day and we can now shop and use awesome jackets. But, labor day also means a shift in what we eat, we bypass cold treats for comfort foods and give thanks for the layers of clothing which hide those extra lbs that are the result of many a yummy treat. I bake year round, but, today I am excited to share a new recipe tested this past weekend as a result of a cookie found in my work kitchen last week; the white chocolate chip & cranberry cookie.

After ingesting the sweet piece of heaven, last week, I instantly felt the need to bake it. The result was a hit! So, here I am highly recommending this recipe as a fall treat for your loved ones! (Perfect for the holiday potlucks which are coming up!)

ShoppingTips - Back to School

Summer is officially over in a few days and we are all well aware of it. Nights are chillier and, in Boston, the throes of returning students are hard to ignore. Among these students is my baby sister and helping her settle in got me thinking on what recommendations would I give incoming and returning students, beyond the basics they hear about. No one really has time at this point in the year and everyone is overwhelmed so I will keep it clear and concise:

StyleInspiration - CARRIE BRADSHAW

Sarah Jessica Parker in Mykita Franz gold aviator
sunglasses on Sex & the City 2 set (image via Popsugar)
So my sister has been on me about ruining a pair of gold over-sized Gucci aviators she got at Saks a few years ago for a very good price. I did not understand why was she so fascinated with these glasses now? So I asked and she told me the reason is: the widely spread metallic mirrored aviator trend got to her, but, preferring to go a classic route she is partial to Gold vs. Green or Orange. I still did not get it. Then she said the magic words: I want to channel Carrie Bradshaw, to be specific, Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City 2 film. Cue in aha moment!

ShoppingTips - The Quilted Jacket

I have been in the pursuit of the perfect quilted jacket for months...(I sometimes believe I, albeit unknowingly, predict trends). Then WhoWhatWear's e-newsletter arrived in my mailbox with a link to their post on "the timelessly cool quilted jacket," and, I knew it was time to up the efforts.

QOTD - Mandy Hale

Have you heard about Mandy Hale aka The Single Woman? She wrote a book, The Single Woman: Life, Love & a Dash of Sass, which I am mid-way through, and pulled this quote from on honoring your friends!

P.S. I am loving this book and it is on my list of "books to gift women you love"
aka those you wish not settle in any aspect of life: sisters, BFFs, daughters, etc (single or married!).

SpotlightOn - #GetScattered

Do you remember the first time you stepped into Bergdorf Goodman? If, like me, you stood in awe of your surroundings and its majesty, it might be time to kick your admiration of Bergdorf's up a notch. The documentary Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorf's is probably the most fascinating behind the scenes fashion film since The September Issue. Not only do we learn it's beginnings but, more interestingly, we learn its historical influence in the fashion industry.

StyleInspiration - DIANE KRUGER

Diane Kruger in Mary Katrantzou
(image via InStyle UK)
In case you missed it, Diane Kruger rocked a digital print strapless dress by Mary Katrantzou at the Fox Summer TCA Party. When Diane rocks something this is definitely a cue to join in! The style maven rocked cutouts, cropped tops and fedoras before the rest of us did. My only wish is that she had worn her hair in a top-knot instead of the loose waves. However, she is the pro, so I'll keep this post simple and sweet! The dress is look 16 from Mary Katrantzou's Resort 2014 collection. It was available on Moda Operandi for $2,825, but, the trunk-show has since ended. So in the mean time, whilst you save your hard-earned bucks for the real thing I have a suggestion for you!

TheHandbagEdit - Keep Calm and Carry All Totes

It seems to me wherever I turn I spot a Louis Vuitton Neverfull canvas tote or a Goyard St. Louis canvas tote. Whether you have seen Kate Moss or Eva Chen carrying the python Balenciaga A4 papier tote or simply got inspired with the introduction of the classic Louis Vuitton Neverfull in the house's epi leather, it seems as though this handbag style is having a major moment for Fall 2013! So the question arises, are the before mentioned really the best totes out there to carry all of your belongings? I ask you to take a moment and consider the following totes by Louis Vuitton, Mulberry and Annabel Ingall.

Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM Epi tote (image via Fabsugar Australia)

I mean, it definitely makes sense we need a roomy open tote which can take a beating and look stylish at the same time, so these leather options in a range of colors ensure just that! The images speak for themselves!

BeautyTalk - Boston Body Barre DVDs

It is my belief that exercise is the fountain of youth. Exercise is the best feel good and look good acquisition we can make. However, I have to admit I am not a gym person. Throughout the years, I have joined and subsequently quit more gyms than I care to share. My theory is that, for me, working out is me time, meaning me and only me, and that simply will not happen in a gym. So, I am constantly on the lookout for workouts I can do at home, and, it is a harder task than you can imagine. Up to recently my workout circulation consisted of runs around the Charles River, Rainbeau Mars yoga & a variety of BeFit's pilates workouts, but, I craved more. So when Gilt City had a promo for Boston Body's Barre DVDs, back in March, I decided to get both and see how it went.

QOTD - Whitney Cummings

Whitney Cummings wise words on The Conversation
To me, nothing is cooler than a funny chick! I mean to be that confident and humor others at the expense of yourself is truly amazingly courageous. Enter, Whitney Cummings, a super funny and successful girl, you may recognize her from appearing on Chelsea Handler's round table or maybe you just LOL when watching 2 Broke Girls, which she is co-creator of, but you've definitely seen her and her work. Featured on last week's webisode of The Conversation, Whitney had these poignant words regarding work, love, and fears and creativity...

TheHandbagEdit - HUNTING SEASON

I feel like come July, maybe because we have crossed the year's midpoint, always calls for a need for fresh inspiration and additions to the sartorial collection. Intermix is well known for having a knack at perfectly curated pieces each season, I also happen to love their sales, but, that is off topic. Many of the pieces they sell can only be found within their stores, cue in Hunting Season, a collection of exotic skin handbags by Danielle Corona. The added elements of uniqueness and simplicity are somewhat appealing in this current time when everyone and anyone is carrying the said handbag of the moment, like say the Céline luggage tote.

QOTD - Abraham Lincoln

The fight for equality has been in our thoughts recently, though it is a battle fought throughout time. May we continue to strive for virtue of equality and remember the words spoken by Abraham Lincoln during the Gettysburg Address aka one of the Best Speeches of all time! Happy Fourth of July! Happy Birthday USA!

SpotlightOn - #MANREPELLER

As early as I can remember I found solace in books and music. Many days of my awkward teen years, one might argue those years have yet to end, were spent locked up in my shared bedroom with my nose in a book and the music blaring to drown out my companions noise. You see as the eldest of seven children solace was actually quite rare. Fast forward to many many years later and I sit atop my bed where I have spent the whole day accompanied by tea or coffee (don't judge I am nursing a week long cold) inhaling Leandra Medine's aka The Man Repeller's account of her journey thus far in Man Repeller: Seeking Love, Finding Overalls. In her book Medine is honest, raw and quite witty. Not only does she let us into many an embarrassing moment of her life but she also conveys the feeling of "hey we are alright in our eccentric and unique way". Ultimately, there is no greater inspiration than the camaraderie discovered in reading someone's true story and recognizing slivers of one's own nuisances and hopes. Upon its release for sale I encourage many a mother, sister, and friend to purchase for those cool and special women in your life: trust me on this one!

ShoppingTips - NEUTRALS IN THE SUN

June is more than half over and no matter what crazy weather Mother Nature has been blessing you with, chances are, when the sun is out and time is good, you are most definitely out and about. My activity of choice is walking down to the Charles River with an entertaining book, my iPod and setting up shop on one of its docks. Many times my look is far from chic and more like bed head mess. But, the heat and sun aren’t real excuses for not looking good so I did some thinking and came up with this easy and breathable outfit to wear during any outdoor summer soiree, whether its for walk in Santorini or a BBQ at your boyfriend's house.

StyleInspiration - ISABEL MARANT

We are all excited upon this morning's news that Isabel Marant pour H&M 2013 is coming to a store near you on November 14th!! While I usually think oh nice when collaborations are announced, only one got me out of bed and onto the streets and that was Lanvin for H&M. (The French design houses really know their stuff!) I can guarantee I will be up when this hits stores. In anticipation I am celebrating this announcement with a few ways we can prep our wardrobes with some Marant inspired chicness.
When I think Isabel Marant I picture gorgeous jackets, full of detail, and impeccably finished which just make the outfit (think Rosie Huntington-Whitely). I know you may be thinking of her wedge sneakers or boho dresses and shoes, but not moi. For now these jackets will help me channel the Marant spirit (at least in my head!)

StyleInspiration - CANNES "WORKS" THE MIDI

If you have been paying attention to the Cannes 2013 red carpet style you may have noticed the Midi Skirt is here and proud! Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, Nicole Kidman in Dior Haute Couture, Naomi Watts in Dolce & Gabbana, newcomer Sonam Kapoor in Elie Saab, and the list goes on but I think we get the picture. On the red carpet the Midi silhouette has allowed these ladies to showcase amazing shoes that typically would be hidden beneath floor length gowns. Celebs have also worn midi looks at many other events (loved Solange Knowles in J.Crew at Coachella!) and they were all over A/W 2013 runway shows. However, my favorite place to wear midis is to work!

As a walking to work commuter you might encounter certain climate issues that affect your sartorial choices. Spring is windy and rainy, which causes potentially flashing innocent bystanders, and the summer is simply too hot for any fabric to be close to your body. (Or you might also be hyper-sensitive as to not offend coworkers with anything too short).

ShoppingTips - COZY CROCHET

The thought of crochet might take you back to images of your Nana diligently stitching together patterns with these funny looking sticks, or, in my case, it causes flashbacks to your home EC classes where you forced to master the technique. Needless to say, typically speaking, crochet does not elicit images of high fashion. Yet this delicate and breathable fabric is the perfect antidote to hot summer days when running around clothe-less is not an option. Whether you have a date, dinner with the girls, a beach soiree or an afternoon outdoor lunch, one of these dresses is perfect for you!
