Decor101 - White & Gold Bedroom Tips and Tricks!

White & Gold w/ COLOR bedroom inspiration!
(image via Eclectic Living Home)
It has been a VERY long time since I last posted on this blog. Life has been hectic to say the least initially wrapping up job interview processes; juggling job offers (still cannot believe I got three within a week, after over four months unemployed) &, ultimately, starting a new analytic role at a renewable energy company downtown.

I absolutely love my new job but still have SO much to learn about this extremely complex and ever-changing industry. So with little time for fun “stuff” this blog fell by the way-side as did sleep and taking care of myself really. The good news is I am back!

QotD - ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Image via Babson
Funny how inspiration always rears it's head at an unexpected time. The various communications about an upcoming reunion from my alma mater, Babson College, have recently led to frequent visits it's website. Given I have been in a period of unemployment, the last thing I expected was to feel connected to that placed which formed the foundation of my professional career. But then there it was, a definition of entrepreneurship as told by Stephanie which caused me to light up with hope and illusion. Because, whether facing rejection for a job application or a business plan, that drive to continue is priceless.

TheHandbagEdit - Clutchin' on to Summer Sales

Now on Sale! (all images via SSense)
Summer is in full swing and we have now celebrated Independence Day in the U.S. This can only mean that sales are in full swing! Rather than get sad and stressed we are getting closer to lower temps, it is best to embrace the warm weather and see how the the retail schedules benefit us ladies! (we must aid retailers in making space for fall wares)

My take is always, always, be alert for accessories when on sale as they hold value much longer than any top or skirt will. And now you get to benefit from my prowl! Here are four amazing luxury bags under $500!!

ShoppingTips - Rock the Job Hunt

What do I wear to an interview?! (image via
Fashion Tag)
Summer means many things; apparently, it means an uptick in those on the job market, as those recent college grads, those with summers off and the unemployed all hit the streets. As people begin taking vacations and things slow down for those of us unemployed, we really must focus our efforts on rocking that first impression. Since I had not been in the market for a new job since 2007 my sartorial options were nonexistent and job interview chic was an aspirational concept. That does not mean I broke the bank to put together an easy to grab and classic "land a job" look!

BeautyTalk - Bouncy Summer Hair

Crave Barbara Fialho's exemplary luscious
 summer hair? Try my tips!
(image via Instagram)
Ahh summer when days are longer and humidity is out of control. How to you keep your hair in check is a major question that (surely) keeps coming up in the minds of stylish ladies everywhere. Do you simply permanently slick it back? or, perhaps, you defiantly attempt to style it only tie it up in a knot two minutes out the door?!

A major topknot fan, I also love flowy, bouncy, shiny hair. One of the best compliments I have received was when an acquaintance told me she would be calling me Pantene due to my awesome bouncy hair!

SpotlightOn - Jugos Boston & my first Juice cleanse!

So I fell down a few stairs two weeks ago and sprained my ankle meaning I needed to back off my workouts. Given I am going down to Miami next week, I decided this would be the perfect time to try a juice cleanse, since you are supposed to take it easy workout-wise while doing one. It was something I had wanted to try but never felt it was the right time to forgo food...I mean I really love food, but what I don't love is seeing those pounds creep on, feeling heavy, and simply not on top of my game. With that in mind I reached out to Jugos in Back Bay and ordered their Cleanse Clasico for pickup on Tuesday morning (right after Memorial weekend's last hurrah!).

RecipeTime - The Perfect Summer Salad

The end result on my first try at Kale, Quinoa &
Shrimp salad! #nofilter
Being social led me to have kale twice within five days, and, I liked it! So, obviously, it led to searching for a recipe that seemed appealing enough to try at home as I wanted to realistically incorporate it into my life. In addition to kale I wanted a recipe that included quinoa in order to ensure a super charged meal.

This craving led me to a recipe for a Kale, Quinoa, Red Pepper and Avocado Salad with Lemon Dijon Vinaigrette, which I proceeded to enhance by adding roasted shrimp!

I am obsessed!

StyleInspiration - Fashion Films & Carine Roitfeld

I have a hard time saying I love fashion. Why? Because I think every two females, of three, says they "love fashion." Hence, I describe myself as a style aficionado, relishing in the everyday beauty of, actually, everything.

When I get the opportunity to study real-life fashionistas, in the increasing selection of fashion docu films, I take it all in. Relaxing and literally settling in with a glass of wine; rewinding anytime I think I missed a great quote or lesson. Though fashion films are more common than say 10 years ago they are still a bit rare.

Thankfully though my thirst was satisfied when, this passed weekend, I discovered Carine Roitfeld's 'Mademoiselle Con Netflix and it has become one of my favorite fashion films out there!

QotD - MINDY KALING

We all go through our days feeling quite foreign and detached from the rest of the world. Sometimes we find solace in a book or sitcom. In my case The Mindy Project is my weekly comedic release & how amazing is it that she is quite relatable in real life too! This quote I found whilst reading Vogue US interview with the comedienne (April 2014 issue) proves Mindy Kaling and I are two peas in a pod! (Plus how hot does she look?! I am obsessed with the look head to toe!)

P.S. If you were born in the 80s (especially the early years) you have to read Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me (And Other Concerns) by Mindy and prepare to LOL while inhaling this book! I single out birth years because younger friends did not find as relatable.

P.P.S. News has broken! Mindy is working on her next book titled Why not me? & I cannot wait!

ShoppingTips - Emma Stone's Met Gala look

Emma Stone at Met Gala 2014 illustration
by Meagan Morrison
(via Travel Write Draw)
Crop tops came out in full force at this year's Met Gala, reason enough to hit the gym today. Whilst, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway and Gabrielle Union looked awesome, no one looked more fresh and effortless than Emma Stone. The fact she paired two tones of pink without batting an eye makes her the daredevil fashionista of the crop top pack. Why not take a cue from Miss Stone's teachings and put into her practice her lessons?!

I could not have been happier when I saw Emma Stone's look simply because it was such an easy outfit to emulate! How often do celebrities and fashionistas alike walk red carpets with amazing sartorial looks which in no way can be applied to a commoners life? So, you may have the ingredients to this outfit within your closet, but, in the off chance you do not, here are my picks for recreating Emma Stone's concept.

BeautyTalk - The Nude Nail

Nude nails grace a Monique Lhullier

Spring fashion show (image via Stylelist)

The nail art business has truly taken off - just scroll through #nailart on instagram and you can be insanely amazed about the little works of art that can be placed on your nails. But, while I can appreciate the talent behind such creations, it is not a trend for me (similar to the ugly shoe trend wrecking havoc - I say no!). Actually, I could probably be called a nail color prude, decorating my hands with red and red alone. But, sometimes when spring or summer hits and your wardrobe is bursting in color you prefer to let your clothes and accessories do the talking and thus the challenge becomes: How do I go about achieving a streak-free, clean and polished looking nude nail?

I got the answer!

QOTD - Saint John Paul II

On Sunday, the Catholic Church canonized Pope John Paul II. Given my love for quotes I spent the day reading his teaching and came across this gem. Times have changed yet adversity, bias, injustice and many other stigmas prevail.

While faiths and political opinions differ, the fact is we are humans. Thus, from time to time, it may be wise to remind ourselves and reflect on St. John Paul II's words here regarding humanity.

RecipeTime - Overnight Cinnamon Rolls

Tasty closeup of finished overnight cinnamon rolls

(image via my kitchen)
With Mother's Day around the corner, I decided to post a recipe ahead of time in order to give you space for a test run. Once you try this recipe you will realize those awesome cinnamon rolls you rarely encounter can come out of your kitchen! They aren't that hard - really! But they do take some time. My advice start these after lunch on a leisurely Saturday afternoon and enjoy with your coffee on Sunday.
The lucky ones that get to try your results will most likely hail you as supreme baker. Your best best is to make these for mom or, better yet, mom-in-law and guarantee you place in the favorites category.

Ok let's get started!

ShoppingTips - Crop Top Edit #OOTN

Last Saturday's outfit of the night! (details below)
Its been awhile since I have sat down to write a post for the blog, and even longer since I shared a pic from my closet, but this post is worth the wait! This weekend I wore an outfit I spent a month putting together, yep, the most effortless looks require time and patience. Whilst I have been obsessed with crop tops as a petite lady I was not enthralled with pairing one with a midi skirt for night. (I do love a midi for work and daytime though!)

So I looked and looked and then upon seeing Song of Style decided on pairing a crop top with high waisted scuba skater skirt. You would think this was a simple task to fulfill but finding the perfect skirt proved to be difficult. However, if you persist you will succeed! Below is my awesome outfit for $50 dollars!

StyleInspiration - The Return of the Backpack

Chanel Spring Summer 2014 Paris Fashion
Week Show (image via The Sartorialist)
Today is the first day of Spring! Luckily Boston is actually having a springlike day. Thank you weather gods! There is nothing like the illusion of spring to get me happy and inspired. Longer days, patio dinners, runs along the Charles = bliss. So, what do I think is the best accessory for these busy and fun-filled days?

Why The Backpack of course!

QOTD - Gloria Steinem

Recently I have allowed work and other responsibilities to take a front line places in the priority list. As it frequently happens, in order to keep up with work, home, health and familial obligations we deprive ourselves of the simple treat of dreaming. When everything else requires immediate attention isn't our creativity the first of all sacrifices? But, if super serious Gloria Steinem recognizes the importance and need for dreaming, should not we all too must make time and DREAM BIG? I surely think so!

BeautyTalk - Aging Gracefully

Rachel Weisz is the epitome of an
"Beauty has no expiration date." Our bodies take a beating simply surviving the various situations we deal with daily. Whether you are mom juggling the home and kids' schedules, a corporate crusader or young woman trying to make it, the fact is our days are long and our faces pay the price. We all know drinking water and getting sleep are basic requirements, but, what else can we do to ensure looking & feeling our best without going under the knife?

This sense of owning what God gave me is a constant evolution which has enabled a graceful transition into my 30s. Growing up, far from considered good looking, I settled comfortably in the awkward realm until my 20s, when, like many, I found ways to maximize God's given traits and put my best foot forward, figuratively and literally. At this time I have never used Botox nor fillers (have not ruled it out forever though), and, I firmly (no pun intended) believe the items below are to be given credit for this!

ShoppingTips - Black & Gold

Cèline cuff street style (image via La Modella Mafia)
Let's be honest: winter is dragging on. The autumn/winter fashion week's have not helped in the inspiration department, but, alas we must go on. So, in an effort to inject some glam into our lives without inappropriately dressing for the temps outside I give you a simple variation to the little black dress (& gold) look we can implement regardless of seasons inspired by a blast from the past Carrie Bradshaw Sex and the City look!

QotD - Leopoldo López

Original image via El Mundo
As a news enthusiast & a Latin American my attention has been on Venezuela these past few weeks. Far from being a political activist, I am guided by empathy for our brothers and sisters that have lead lives of oppression for over 15 years. In the midst of these protests a hero has been thrust into the spotlight: Leopoldo López (if you do not know about him read a bit on Bloomberg's Businessweek).

Prior to being arrested López told the crowds: "El que se cansa, pierde" / He who tires, loses.

A simple phrase that can keep us going no matter what we are going through!

StyleInspiration - Blue & White Chinoiserie

Caroline Sieber at the Giambattista Valli Couture
fashion show SS 2014 (image via PurePeople)
According to Roopal Patel, vintage floral prints are in for Spring 2014. Now it may be due to an insatiable home decor appetite or just a whim but I am really feeling this concept! Recently Caroline Sieber stepped out for Paris Couture fashion week in a Blue & White Chinoiserie print that caught my eye. Now, if you have check Caro's Instagram you can see she is no stranger to the beauty of vintage florals as evident in this image which appears to be taken in her London home. That said, it is still admirable she made succeeded in the interpretation of a homey print into a modern and fresh reality when she attended the Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Haute Couture show.

Now we can't all dress in Giambattista Valli but this little concoction below is my take on bringing a vintage floral print into your sartorial repertoire.

SpotlightOn - Decorist

Jonathan Adler inspired mockup (image
via Decorist)
I have lived in my apartment almost ten years (only second to my childhood home) and in September of last year I decided it was time to give it a refresh after spotting a deep purple sofa on sale at Crate & Barrel that I felt was missing in my life. Little did I know what I was getting myself into! I know see why interior designers make big bucks and remain in business. It is so hard! So kudos to the ladies and gentlemen that do this professionally.

These months have morphed into an evolutionary & organic process whereby I am constantly looking for inspiration (Houzz is the best!) until it just clicks: you see what you like and, you go into the real world to find it or make it happen. For me this has meant hours on Etsy, bi-weekly trips to Marshalls & adventures into the world of framing and doing it yourself.  However, one of the biggest challenges has been envisioning how the object of my affection will look like in the space before making the purchase. You become stubborn or enamored but have no idea if or how to make it work.

ShoppingTips - The Not Just for Valentine's Day look

Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana & Sarah Jessica
Parker Red & Pink Color Block (image via InStyle)
I love any excuse to concoct a perfect outfit. The problem here lies many times the imaginary event never occurs! However, Valentine's Day is a very real event which is just around the corner. And, if you are planning with your special someone, new or old, or simply taking to the town with your girlfriends the fact is you want to look awesome!

So, whether your style is more Carrie Bradshaw than Giovanna Battaglia, below I make the case for why a pointy toe pump, mini bag & a sheath dress are the three items to make.that.happen.

ShoppingTips - The Stylish Tourist

Candice Swanepoel for Vogue Australia
It has been awhile since I was in brand new lands that called upon my curious instincts, thus, requiring me to be turn into a tourist. But, alas it happened! While I prefer to just hang with locals doing their regular activities, my trip down to Panama clamored for discovery (I mean growing up in Honduras I heard this was the country that did not enjoy being part of Central America and therefore earned a "too cool for us reputation"). So before we departed I came up with the perfect outfit for those days of walking, learning, whilst remaining true to your stylish self!

Ingredients:
1. Crop top: choose fitted to show off gym results or looser to graze the skirt.
2. Midi Skirt: this is literally the most comfortable bottom to wear! Shorts and pants can stick to legs when sweaty and mini skirts have a tendency to fly up when windy.
3. Flat T-strap sandal: this is a classic shape which you could wear with any outfit. I also love a classic gladiator but when these have too many bells and whistles they tend to ruin the more feminine outfits.

RecipeTime - Baked Tilapia, Oven Roasted Potatoes & Asparagus

The result of the recipes below served for
New Year's Eve dinner by moi!
I just got back from Panama and enjoyed an incredible amount of seafood whilst there. There are so many health benefits found in seafood but it is also incredibly delicious. The meal below has become my go to homemade treat in the passed few months. So, though New England is blisteringly cold at the moment, lets eat as if we were enjoying the sun near the equator!

The potatoes take the longest to cook so lets begin there...
