SpotlightOn - Decorist

I have lived in my apartment almost ten years (only second to my childhood home) and in September of last year I decided it was time to give it a refresh after spotting a deep purple sofa on sale at Crate & Barrel that I felt was missing in my life. Little did I know what I was getting myself into! I know see why interior designers make big bucks and remain in business. It is so hard! So kudos to the ladies and gentlemen that do this professionally.

These months have morphed into an evolutionary & organic process whereby I am constantly looking for inspiration (Houzz is the best!) until it just clicks: you see what you like and, you go into the real world to find it or make it happen. For me this has meant hours on Etsy, bi-weekly trips to Marshalls & adventures into the world of framing and doing it yourself.  However, one of the biggest challenges has been envisioning how the object of my affection will look like in the space before making the purchase. You become stubborn or enamored but have no idea if or how to make it work.

This is where Decorist comes in!

So, this is how it works: you sign up and pick and choose items for a room, everything from wall paint to rugs to side tables, and then, based on your choices your style profile is determined. Which by the way they nailed mine!

Once that is complete you now can create your own mockups, using anything on the web basically, can ask interior designers questions for free or pay nominal fees (meaning under $170) for personal decorating consultations! This all appears in your dashboard as well as many a mockup next to the style inspiration photo. Your dashboard also includes a deal of the day featuring a stylish and economical purchase suggestion (my February 20th deal is at your right).

My take:

I, literally, discovered it yesterday and cannot not talk about it! Honestly, I was initially annoyed with myself given I spent so much time creating mockups in Microsoft Paint! But, after getting over that, I love everything this tool represents. The majority of people cannot afford an interior designer but you do want to inject your style into your home. And quite frankly many of us like to do things ourself! This is what we have needed! Help is always available and they are giving you the tools to imagine and reimagine, design and redesign without having to drop bucks on software or consultations.

Someone at Decorist must have been inspired by the proverb below and bring it into the world of decor:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. - Chinese Proverb

Happy decorating!

P.S. - below are my quiz mockup and style profile results!
